Men’s briefs: styles, fabrics & fit.

What makes a brief a brief, the main styles, how they compare with trunks and boxer briefs, and how to choose a pair that fits properly.

What makes a brief a brief?

Briefs are close-fitting underwear with little or no leg: the leg openings sit at or above the top of the thigh, and the fabric hugs the body from waistband to crotch. That short-leg cut is the defining feature – it’s what separates briefs from trunks, boxer briefs and boxers, which all extend down the leg.

Briefs give firm support, don’t ride up under clothing the way some longer cuts can, and leave a clean line under trousers. For many lads, they’re simply the look they like best.

The main styles

Classic (full-rise) briefs

The original cut: a waistband at or near the natural waist, full coverage at the back and leg openings that sit high on the thigh. Often in cotton with a contrast waistband – the “tighty whities” look.

Low-rise briefs

The same shape with a waistband that sits lower on the hips. A more modern line that suits low-waisted jeans and chinos.

Y-fronts

Briefs with an inverted-Y fly panel at the front. A heritage style that’s had a revival; some have a working fly, many are purely decorative.

Sport briefs

Briefs in technical, moisture-wicking fabrics with firmer support and flatter seams, designed for the gym and running.

Hip briefs (“hipsters”)

A slightly deeper side panel than a classic brief, sitting between a brief and a trunk. Still a short-leg cut with the leg line on the hip.

Mini briefs

A narrower side panel and higher leg line for a minimal look. The most revealing cut that still counts as a brief.

Fabrics

  • Cotton – breathable, soft and easy to wash. Usually blended with a little elastane so it holds its shape. Great for everyday wear.
  • Modal and other viscose fibres – smoother and silkier than cotton, with good drape and a cool feel. Tends to pill less.
  • Microfibre (polyester or nylon with elastane) – light, stretchy and quick-drying, with a sleek finish. Common in sport and fashion briefs.
  • Rib and textured knits – a ribbed or waffle surface for a vintage look with extra stretch.
  • Mesh – maximum airflow for training or hot weather.

Getting the fit right

  • Measure your waist where the waistband will sit and use each brand’s size chart – sizes vary between brands.
  • The waistband should lie flat without digging in or rolling over.
  • The pouch should support without squashing; a contoured pouch helps if standard fronts feel tight.
  • The leg openings should sit smoothly on the hip without cutting in. Red marks after a few hours mean a size up.
  • At the back, briefs should cover without bagging. Excess fabric usually means a size down or a different cut.

Caring for your briefs

  • Wash at 30–40°C, inside out, and keep whites with whites so they stay bright.
  • Skip fabric softener on technical fabrics – it reduces wicking and stretch.
  • Air-dry when you can: tumble-drying wears out elastane and waistbands faster.
  • Replace pairs when the waistband loses its grip or the fabric thins.
